Using a Domain with Squarespace.com

First, enter the domain you registered at 1&1 into Squarespace. You then have to create a subdomain (required for verification purposes) and edit the DNS record so that your domain is rerouted to the Squarespace web server.

Please note: If one or more A records have already been created for the selected domain, you must delete them before you can create the four A records required for the Squarespace link. You can delete an A record at any time by clicking DELETE RECORD in Actions.

Once all existing A records have been deleted, you can create the four A records required one after the other by proceeding as follows.

  • Click ADD RECORD and select A under Type.
  • Under Host name, enter the string that is located at Squarespace under Host: @
  • Under Value, enter the value that is on Squarespace under Required details: 198.185.159.144
  • Leave the TTL (Time to Live) at the preselected time of 1 hour and click SAVE.

Repeat the previous steps for the remaining three A-records. The only difference is that you must enter a different value under Value than in the first A record. The values for the remaining three A records are: 198.185.159.145, 198.49.23.144 and 198.49.23.145

Deleting AAAA Records in the 1&1 Control Panel

Finally, check the DNS records overview to see if AAAA records exist. Delete existing AAAA records by clicking DELETE RECORD under Actions.

Please note: Modifications at 1&1 are normally effective worldwide within 1 minute. However, due to the decentralized structure of the domain name system, the old settings may still be visible for more than 1 hour, since there may be delays in updating the cache.

Check the Modified Settings with Squarespace

Once you have changed all the necessary settings, you can check the results in your Squarespace user account. To do this, click REFRESH in the overview of the DNS records.

In the Current details column, you can see whether the respective DNS modifications are now reflected.
