Using Your Own Name Servers for a Domain

1&1 allows you to use your own name servers instead of the 1&1 name servers for each domain. This lets you delegate management of your domain's DNS settings to another provider or even host your own name servers.

Specifying Name Servers

You can change the name servers for the domain by accessing the Manage Domains section of the 1&1 Control Panel.

  • Select a domain and click the Nameservers tab.
  • Click the option Use custom name servers and enter your name servers into the corresponding fields.
  • Click Save to modify the name servers.

You can edit or reset the name server settings in this section at any time. To reset your name server settings and use the 1&1 default name servers, click Reset settings.

If you change the name servers, it can take up to 48 hours before the change takes effect everywhere due to the decentralized structure of the domain name system.

Effects of Using Your Own Name Servers

If you do not use the 1&1 name servers, you cannot configure your DNS settings in the 1&1 Control Panel. In this case, you will need to make changes to the settings with the actual DNS provider or with the particular external name server.
