What are the advantages of Linux web hosting and why should I use it?Both Linux and Windows have proven to be a powerful basis for creating large websites. Each operating system offers all the basic functions required to run your website. In principle, numerous open source applications are available in order to get the best of Linux and certain features like MyWebsite or the Click & Build app are only available to Linux web hosting users. Linux is also particularly suitable for PHP, Perl or MySQL. Our top PHP features – including several stable versions, extended support, and OpCache – are currently only available in the 1&1 Linux packages. Additionally, you can also use Linux web hosting if you have a Windows operating system already installed on your home computer or laptop. External servers and your end devices can all be connected easily to one another.
What are the different hosting plans that 1&1 offers?1&1 provides a selection of hosting plans all of which can be ordered either with Linux or Windows server. If you just want a basic online presence, the small hosting package is the ideal solution. If you have more advanced projects in mind, choose one of our larger hosting packages. For businesses, we recommend our largest hosting package. All three hosting packages come with sufficient amount of Webspace. All hosting plans include dual hosting, protecting your website by storing your data simultaneously in our high-tech data centers in two separate locations.
Can I use different web addresses on my hosting package?Yes, you can use different web addresses for your 1&1 hosting packages. You can host as many web addresses as you like, from hosting multiple subdomains to hosting unlimited external domains. Other features include URL-Masking, domain access without the www. prefix, and DNS Management. URL-Masking is a type of domain forwarding, which automatically sends the user to the destination page without changing the URL address. A Domain Name System (DNS) is a system that translates a domain name as we know it into the computer recognized IP address form. This enables computers to communicate in their IP language. By having access and control over your DNS you can point your domain names to any static IP address or host name, use the 1&1 name servers to set your own mail servers, point your external domains to your 1&1 servers, and even transfer your external domains to 1&1 for free.
I want to build a website based on WordPress. Can I host it on 1&1?Yes, you can host your WordPress website on 1&1! If your project grows and you need more web space, you can easily order it. Besides all the features that WordPress already has to offer, 1&1 will provide you with a selection of Click & Build options which are easy to implement in order to improve your website.
Which Linux distribution is used for hosting? We use the Debian Linux distribution for our web hosting. Debian is a flexible and beginner-friendly operating system with minimal system requirements that includes a diverse array of applications and utility programs. Debian has been continuously evolving since 1996 and the extensively tested OS (operating system) can now be installed on every modern Linux server. The Debian Linux hosting package from 1&1 delivers a reliable and safe software base for all your content and websites.
Can I choose/change the Linux distribution? No. As a customer you do not have direct access to the operating system of the server. In the shop you can either opt for the current Linux or the current Windows version. Use our handy comparison Linux vs. Windows to determine which of these two operating systems and their specific features and advantages is best to meet your hosting needs. Whichever operating system you decide on, we ensure that the latest version of Linux or Windows is always available to you. You profit from increased safety and are free to concentrate on what is important: your website and its content.
Can I change my operating system later on?You can change the operating system of your server from Linux to Windows or Windows to Linux at any time by changing your package. To swap operating systems, just visit our customer shop. You can then easily migrate your website and content from a Linux server to a Windows server or vice versa.
Can I change my Linux hostname and how?Yes, it is possible to change your Linux web hostname. There are two ways to do this: a temporary change of name that will revert back to the original name upon reboot, or a permanent change of name.
For a temporary name change, open a terminal window and type the command 'hostname' without any parameter, the current hostname will appear. In order to change it, simply type 'NEW_HOSTNAME'. Replace 'NEW_HOSTNAME' with your desired Linux web hostname.
For a permanent name change, most of the latest Linux distributions (Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS, Fedora, RedHat, etc.) function best with the "systemd" system and service manager. Simply use the 'sudo hostnamectl set-hostname NEW_HOSTNAME' command.
What's the difference between Linux and Windows Hosting?Windows and Linux are two very different types of operating systems – each with unique advantages. Both Linux and Windows formats will work on any PC regardless of the operating system in use. However, each technology has its own distinctive characteristics. Linux web hosting is ideal if you are using PHP, MySQL or Perl programming languages, or if your website displays information in brochure, newsletter or data sheet formats. In contrast, Windows offers Windows-specific technologies such as ASP, .NET and Microsoft Access. There are also various advantages if you plan to integrate Windows-based applications or searchable databases within your website. If you aim to use out-of-the box solutions for powering content management systems or blogs, bear in mind that there are generally more open source applications available for Linux web hosting, whereas Windows licensed solutions will likely incur costs.
What is Linux hosting with cPanel? The cPanel control panel is a multilingual web-based configuration and management tool for Linux web. Various hosting services offer cPanel to their customers. It supports Microsoft FrontPage extensions and Java using Apache Tomcat. The control panel has an intuitive interface, allowing users to easily control every element of their hosting service from one central place. Below is an overview of its functions.
With cPanel, users can manage multiple domains and set up subdomains if required. It makes it easier to control, for example, third party software such as blogs, forums or online shops. cPanel allows users to create databases, back up data and directories, and maintain an oversight of used storage space. With just a few clicks, you can create e-mail accounts and mailing lists, set up forwarding or automatic responses, and set filtering rules for e-mail accounts.
There are a number of ways to make best use of the cPanel security features. The control panel allows you to create as many directories as you like and protect them with passwords of your choosing. Additionally, users can configure SSL/TLS and GnuPG (GPG) keys, and create FTP users and manage their access rights. The ModSecurity firewall protects against unauthorized http requests while HotLink Protection prevents attempts by other websites to create direct links to files on your website. Leech Protect protects password-protected directories from suspicious activity. And finally, there are countless analysis and statistic tools available to cPanel users – users can access the log files of their web server at any time.
Do I need prior knowledge of Linux? No, as a customer you do not need any knowledge of the operating system of your server, which is a complex, closed system that you do not have direct access to. Instead, we will do all the required technical and administrative maintenance, security, back-up and updating work for you, so the full scope and functionality of your 1&1 webhosting package is always available to you. All other relevant work, like integrating your content, installing sub-domains or creating e-mail addresses can be done easily via a special management interface, without having to work directly with the operating system.
